MY NAME IS KATE
My name is Kate Giles, I was born in Bristol, England. I've spent most of my life in New Zealand, specifically Manurewa and Papakura.
The basic idea of my research is finding out how I can bring both the two-dimensional form and three-dimensional form together in a single space through utilizing Unreal Engine. My question is still a work in progress but I am very interested to find out if it is possible to create a game that uses both 2D and 3D in a new and seamless way. Lately I have been seeing more games that use the idea of bringing 2D into a 3D space, and it is usually done in a single aesthetic way that makes all elements of the game still look as if they are flat images. What I want to do is learn how to use Unreal Engine as it is something I haven’t tried before, and then use it to bring 2D elements into a 3D world, incorporating both styles together (2D is flat with hard edges, 3D being a full formed piece) without having to compromise on or the other.
5 keywords that are related to what I want to research are Unreal Engine, Game Environment, 3D, 2D and Game Asset Creation/3D Modelling.
Other keywords that I will also be looking into that are relevant to my project are level design, interactive narrative, immersion, and interactive gameplay.
Through using my key words I was able to find a thesis that will hopefully help with my research called The Ark Project: an investigation into interactive environmental narrative by Andersen, Christopher Graham Ivan.
I will be attempting to search for more relevant thesis's as I did struggle originally to find anything that had closer relation to the design and art within game design.
