Week Two

What is a Context?

Intuitive Map

I wanted to start with a rough map draft as a way to get my basic ideas and thoughts out around the contexts of my question.

Once I have figured out if I am on the right track then I will produce a more detailed version.

Contexts that surround the concept of Aroha:

Identify an influence on your practice from each of the following contexts:

Historical

Art within media has been improving year after year. From what started as 2D comics to then 2D animation to the start of 3D and more, the use of 2D and 3D has been constantly evolving. Seeing the constant changes and the new ways artists and designers have been using these different dimensional forms in different ways have made me interested in finding out what more can be done. The idea of bringing 2D and 3D together has been tested before but it is something I still want to experiment with to see what more can be done with it and if I can still create something more with these forms.

Socio-cultural

As much as I would like to think I am making a game for myself, I am always actually making a game for other players. The socio-cultural aspect is a massive influence on game design in general as games are made to be played and they’re made to be experienced by everyone. This is something I try and think about often when I am creating a game as I am always trying to think about what it will be like from the players perspective. Games are becoming much bigger in terms of bringing people together to play but also the enjoyment and chatter about games are spreading further even to those who wouldn’t normally play games or only specific types.

Political

New Zealand’s game industry has often been regarded as small, and it is when you compare it to other countries. However, in recent years, there has been a lot of momentum in this niche industry becoming bigger and becoming more noticed overseas. The indie game design scene here in Aoteroa is something that I always want to hear about and is something that drives me to want to not only be a part of it but to create something that helps to bring more attention to what our game developers do. Creating a new idea that other game makers may see and take inspiration from is something I really want to be able to achieve and pushes me to constantly think about what games I can create and put out into the world for people to play.
