Week One
Research Overview
‘How’ do you make:
How do you go about making?
First I find inspiration, then sketch and map out ideas. Then I start testing and building/prototyping in Maya and Unity.
What design tools or approaches do you use to frame a problem?
Google and YouTube are my go to for when I need to figure something out, revisiting what I have created and coming up with alternatives helps too.
Why do you prefer some tools or approaches?
Coming up with alternatives helps me to understand what the problem is better, it also opens up my skills to be able to create more which I enjoy. I like using YouTube as I work better visually so seeing what is being done and what I need to do helps me to create my games better.
‘What’ do you make?
What things do you make?
I make games. I also make assets/models for both 2D and 3D that may be used in any 2D or 3D project or environment.
Why does your design work look or function the way it does?
I have an incredibly large interest in all forms of art, focusing on the different art in games is something I enjoy immensely.
How does using a specific design process help you understand/ figure something out?
Prototyping is one of the most important processes when it comes to making something within a game. It’s what enables me to find out what works and what doesn’t within a games environment and how it can be seen to the player when played.
‘Why’ do you make the things you make?
Why did you choose to become a designer?
I have been heavily interested in art and design since I was very very little and was constantly creating. Game design is like a new art form to me that allows me to create and explore my creativity in a medium (games) that I have enjoyed since I was first allowed to play.
What is your discipline?
My discipline is game design, specifically level design, and asset creation. Anything that involves art and creation within games is my discipline.
How has it shaped your understanding of design and its role/purpose/function?
When it comes to design there are so many different ways to create and different mediums that I previously never thought of. Creating in different ways for game design has also shown me how what I make can be used for so many different things in both a real-world context and a technological one and that it doesn’t have to be related to design for it to be useful.
